Teaching
The SoTL Conference is EHL’s premier annual event dedicated to advancing scholarly teaching practices. It brings together educators, researchers, and academic leaders to explore evidence-based strategies that enhance teaching and learning in hospitality and beyond.
Through paper presentations, interactive workshops, and keynote addresses, the conference creates a platform for rich exchange between EHL faculty and global experts from institutions such as the HES-SO and beyond.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) invites professionals to share their own experiences, so that others may reflect on their findings and build upon teaching and learning processes. This conference brings together faculty members and researchers from Switzerland and beyond who are interested in conducting research on teaching and learning, with a particular emphasis on the importance of collaboration between faculty and students to ensure academic success.
Have you ever felt like you were truly aligned with your students, that the line between you and them had blurred, resulting in learning beyond your expectations? Come along to share your experiences and be prepared to learn about new ways to reinvent the faculty/student relationship.
The objective is to share research projects or innovative activities with others in order to help improve future teaching and learning practices.
Often, we hear about the gap between what young graduates can do and what employers are seeking. Despite advances in technology, this gap has not narrowed. For some industries, the gap has widened. Thus, in this year’s SoTL conference, we will ask one question: Are HEIs preparing the next generation of employees with the skills that they need to thrive in the workplace? As a secondary goal, we would also like to investigate why employees return to HEIs for formal or informal programs; which skills do they need to acquire or hone?
2026
The 8th annual International Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) conference brought together faculty members and researchers interested in conducting research on teaching and learning, with a particular emphasis on how technology is being used or should be used in higher education. The theme for this event was motivated by current events in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and the debate surrounding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) in and outside of the classroom.
While Gen AI is touted as a means of saving time on academic tasks, it is not speed (alone) that we should be seeking. In what we refer to as the ‘best day of the year’, 35 participants spent the day sharing ideas and best practices.
2025
The 7th annual Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) conference took place on-site at EHL Hospitality Business School on February 4, 2025. The theme for this event was the inclusion of many versions of partnerships in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that contribute to student success. The partnerships could be faculty-student, faculty-faculty, or faculty-technology. As no man (or woman) is an island, working together is key. SoTL seemed like the ideal venue for discussing how HEI stakeholders can encourage partnerships that would improve engagement, motivation, and, potentially, academic results.
2024
This year’s theme revolved around the significant role that technology has taken and will continue to take in education, and particularly in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), and its relevance in HEI community, innovation, teaching, and learning. After three years of blended SoTL conferences, this year, participants were back on site! From the welcome coffee through the closing apero, the buzz of the participants and the enthusiasm that they exuded was contagious.
2023
The theme for this event was the future of education through research, community, innovation, teaching, and learning. The purpose of SoTL events is to understand, improve, and share teaching and learning practices across disciplines and schools to prepare a new generation of lifelong learners.
2022
After almost two years of "everything online", the topic for the conference was “The Human Touch: Engagement and Creativity through SoTL”. While the expectations had been to have humans engaging with other humans in person, the sanitary conditions (again) affected our plan. Thus, this conference was offered in a HyFlex manner, synchronously to all participants onsite or online.
2021
EHL hosted its third annual Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) conference with the theme: 'Higher Education and Beyond: Promoting Lifelong Learning through SoTL,’ Having completed the spring semester online and beginning the autumn semester in HyFlex mode, EHL, like many other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) was faced with new challenges and opportunities brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
2020
The second SoTL conference took place on February 6 under the heading ‘The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Student Assessment of Learning’. 20 participants from 4 different schools wrestled with questioning the theories and practices of how to grade, support and enhance student learning and its assessment. It was a lively, interactive affair that often resulted in much head scratching and open-ended conclusions. Therein lies the magic of a SoTL conference: In the world of teaching and learning, things are rarely binary and prescriptive. Reassessing and refreshing teaching methods must become regular practice.
