Circular Economy and Tourism: What’s Happening in Chilean Patagonia?

This Swiss–Chilean project explores how circular economy and sustainable tourism intersect in Chilean Patagonia, a region facing growing environmental pressures and global travel trends. It examines tourism’s impact on local ecosystems, infrastructure, and community wellbeing, while testing circular solutions to reduce food waste and strengthen public health. Through system mapping, stakeholder engagement, and research on mass tourism and marine ecosystems, the initiative positions Patagonia as a living lab for climate-resilient, inclusive tourism and innovation.

Closing the Loop: Circular Economy Approaches to Food Waste and Public Health in Subantarctic Patagonia

Project Description

This Swiss–Chilean research and social innovation initiative explores how circular economy strategies and sustainable tourism practices intersect in Chilean Patagonia, a region increasingly shaped by environmental pressures and global travel trends.

The project examines how tourism affects local infrastructure, ecosystems, and community wellbeing in isolated subantarctic areas. It also considers the potential of circular models to support public health and environmental resilience, including, but not limited to, food systems.

In addition to system mapping and stakeholder engagement, the project investigates broader tourism dynamics such as mass tourism, marine ecosystems, and cruise operations. A second research stream focuses on tourism as a potential driver of inclusive development, with attention to social indicators and local capacity-building.

These efforts contribute to academic publications and long-term collaboration, positioning Patagonia as a living lab for climate-resilient, socially grounded tourism and circular innovation.
