How Tourism Pressures the Galapagos: A study of Carrying Capacities and Local Impacts

This project investigates tourism carrying capacities in the Galápagos Islands by analyzing environmental, social, and psychological impacts. It aims to support sustainable tourism strategies that respect both local communities and ecosystems.

How much more can the Galapagos Islands support? Social, ecological and psychographic carrying capacities

Project Description

The project aims to understand how mass tourism can affect the Galapagos Islands as a refuge for nature, from an environmental and social perspective, focusing on how tourists and residents perceive crowdedness.

The project will answer two questions:

  1. How do tourists perceive the destination?
  2. How do local residents live with this tourist presence?

To do this, the project will measure what the islands can really bear (known as their carrying capacity) on three levels:

  1. Environmental: can nature support so many visitors?
  2. Social: do local residents find tourism bearable?
  3. Psychological: how do tourists feel about the experience when it's so crowded?

Thanks to these analyses, the project will propose concrete recommendations to local authorities for:

  • Better plan and manage tourism,
  • Limit tourist overcrowding,
  • Move towards more sustainable tourism that respects both nature and local communities.

Understanding Sustainability Challenges in the Galapagos Islands

Since 2020, an interdisciplinary research team from EHL Hospitality Business School, the Catholic University in Quito, and the Charles Darwin Research Station at the Galapagos in Ecuador have been studying the challenges associated with tourism dynamics at the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Galapagos Islands. This article summarizes the main findings of this collaboration: the carrying capacity of the islands, the sustainability transition of tourism, and the political challenges that have been affecting sustainability efforts in the archipelago.

Postcards From the Galapagos Islands: Do the Fittest Really Survive?

When thinking of the Galápagos Islands the first images that we may conjure up are of giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sharks, beautiful tropical beaches, and a laid-back lifestyle where the troubles of the outside world are non-existent and one’s daily ‘responsibility’ is to swim with the dolphins. This could have been the case in the past, but not in 2020!
