Corporate Decision Making under High Uncertainty

Project Description

The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on the economy and no region has been spared. In this project, we have first analysed the impact of the coronavirus in the different Swiss regions (cantons), focusing on the hotel industry. Second, we have studied the impact of the coronavirus on extreme losses affecting the hospitality industry (hotels and restaurants). Third, we have evaluated the impact of the talent shortage on the hotel industry with a special focus on the Z generation. Last but not least, we have assessed the impact of the coronavirus on financial stability and how this would affect the availability and cost of loans.

Swiss Tourism Amid Dueling Crises: A Look Behind the Numbers

During the Covid crisis, many hospitality players suffered, some weathered the storm and a few even thrived. As the pandemic finally recedes and another threat surges to the forefront, we take a look back at how hospitality has been reshaped by recent events in Switzerland. Two specialists from the EHL Hospitality Business School delve into the statistics before and during Covid, and draw some surprising conclusions. Dr. Stefano Borzillo, Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, specializes in topics relating to individual and collective performance and for a more financial perspective, Dr. Augusto Hasman, also an associate professor at EHL, who teaches finance and risk management.

Transformational Resilience in the Hospitality Industry

EHL Hospitality Business School recently hosted a conference entitled “Transformational Resilience in the Hospitality Industry” where a panel of industry players, ranging from academics to executives to practitioners, discussed the current state of hospitality. Among the topics discussed, the labor shortage was a recurring theme as were the potential solutions to overcoming this global issue. Coping with hospitality’s labor shortage is proving to be a tall order; there's no magic wand but solutions exist - some bolder than others.

Managing the Talent Gap: Sparking Passion for Hospitality in Gen Z

Generation Z (Gen Z) follows after the Millennials and defines individuals born between 1997-2013. Gen Zers are entering the workforce with a different set of expectations and aspirations for their careers and work-life balance. They are more inclined to view careers as a series of different jobs and to seek flexible work. According to researchers, they look for meaning and expect managers to be open to listening and implementing their ideas. They rely heavily on technology for socializing and communication. In recent times, hospitality executives have found it difficult to attract and retain Gen Z workers, so how can the talent gap be effectively managed?
